Focus Shield does not collect, transmit, sell, or share any user data with anyone, ever. Everything the extension stores stays on your own device. There are no accounts, no servers, no analytics, and no tracking of any kind.
What Focus Shield stores
Focus Shield saves a small amount of data locally in your
browser, using Chrome's built-in
storage.local API:
- Your block list — which built-in sites are blocked or allowed, and any sites you added yourself.
- Timers — when a timed unlock, a temporary site allowance, or a quick pass started and when it ends.
- Blocked-visit counts — how many times each site on your list was blocked, today and in total. Only the count per site is stored, never which pages you visited or when.
This data never leaves your device. It is not sent to Focus Shield's developer, to the blocked websites, or to any third party. It is kept only while the extension is installed, and uninstalling the extension deletes it.
What Focus Shield does not do
- It does not collect personally identifiable information, health data, financial data, credentials, or personal communications.
- It does not track your location.
- It does not log or transmit your browsing history.
- It does not read, change, or record the content of any web page.
- It does not monitor clicks, keystrokes, or scroll activity.
- It does not use analytics, telemetry, advertising, or any third-party SDKs.
- It does not communicate with any external server.
Why Focus Shield needs its permissions
- Access to all sites — you can add any website to your block list, so the extension must be able to block it. It is also used to reload open tabs of a site when blocking turns back on. Page content is never read.
- declarativeNetRequest — used to block the sites on your list and show Focus Shield's own page instead.
- storage — used to save your settings locally, as described above.
- alarms — used to turn blocking back on automatically when an unlock or allowance ends.
Chrome Web Store User Data Policy
Focus Shield's use of information complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Data is used only to provide the extension's single purpose — blocking distracting websites — and is never sold, transferred, or used for advertising or creditworthiness.
Your rights
Because no personal data is collected or processed by the developer, there is no data held about you to access, correct, export, or delete. All data stays under your control in your browser, and you can remove it at any time by uninstalling the extension. This applies to users everywhere, including under the GDPR and the CCPA.
Children's privacy
Focus Shield does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children under 13.
